Dragon's Dogma 2 creator, Hideaki Itsuno, has stated that he prefers players to become totally lost in the game's vast universe as instead of depending only on fast travel options.
In a perceptive interview with IGN, Itsuno expressed the opinion that fast travel can often be a sign of boring gameplay. He underlined that it is the duty of game designers to make routine gameplay in the game interesting in order to keep players from skipping it.
Itsuno encouraged developers to enhance the travel experience,
"Just give it a try. Travel is perceived as boring? That’s a misconception. It becomes an issue only if your game fails to captivate. All you need to do is make travel an enjoyable part of the experience."
Itsuno gave insights on how to do this such as planning out discoveries and introducing different opponent encounters to make each adventure fresh. He pushed for putting competitors in difficult roles, such as placing them in unknown and perhaps dangerous situations just ahead.
Despite the fact that Dragon's Dogma 2 includes two rapid travel options, Itsuno made sure to limit their use to discourage over-reliance. Players can use rare Ferrystone goods to teleport to Port Crystals or take Oxcarts along particular routes. However, the latter is not without risk, as Oxcarts can be attacked by opponents along the way.
Itsuno outlined a likely scenario by explaining,
“While riding [an oxcart], you might find the path blocked by goblins and have no choice but to get off and join the battle. Then as you do, a Griffin might swoop in and destroy the entire cart with one blow, forcing you to walk the rest of the way while cursing its name.”
Dragon's Dogma 2, which is planned to release on March 22, will be available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Itsuno's dedication to an engaging travel experience is apparent in the game's goal to presenting players with a rich and immersive journey across its attractive world.
