According to new data from Sony Interactive Entertainment, PlayStation 5 owners are evenly split on whether to totally turn off their consoles or use the energy-saving rest mode between gaming sessions.
In an interview with Game File, Cory Gasaway, Sony's Vice President of Game, Product, and Player Experiences, disclosed that internal data indicates a 50/50 split among players in terms of rest mode usage. It also affected the development of the PlayStation 5's Welcome Hub, a flexible UI intended to improve the console's starting experience.
Gasaway explained,
“We assumed most players would favor rest mode for its convenience, but our research found an even split. For U.S. players booting up their consoles, they often land on the Explore page. Outside the U.S., players see their most recently played game.”
The PS5's rest mode, launched as part of Sony's work for energy , enables fast downloads and game resuming. However, some gamers have reported concerns such as broken internet connectivity, causing them to stop the feature completely. Others like rest mode because of its simplicity and lower power consumption compared to fully active activity.
The Welcome Hub was created during a PlayStation hackathon with the goal of providing a single experience to all users, regardless of the beginning settings. With features such as a customized interface and a common starting point, the hub caters to a variety of player preferences while providing a more smooth gameplay experience.
The argument over rest mode highlights the problems of catering to a global audience with various requirements and opinions. Nonetheless, Sony's efforts to adjust its user experience show a commitment to both development and player feedback.
