Rockstar Games is reportedly in talks with top content developers from platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite about the possibility of custom-built experiences in Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6). This information is based on a recent Digiday report, which claims three industry insiders in touch with the discussions.
A New Era of User-Generated Content in GTA 6?
According to the source, Rockstar is considering allowing creators the option to change GTA 6's environment and assets, allowing them to put their own intellectual properties into the game's big open world. If confirmed, this plan would represent a substantial shift in Rockstar's approach to community-driven content, aligning GTA 6 with other big platforms that have embraced user-generated experiences.
Platforms such as Roblox and Fortnite already allow developers to earn money from personalized content by receiving a share of virtual goods sales. While Rockstar has not confirmed specifics about how this will operate in GTA 6, the possibility of a similar system might create new chances for both independent and established creators to earn from their work.
Rockstar’s History with Mods and Roleplaying
This development comes after Rockstar's 2023 acquisition of CFX.RE, the developer behind some of the most popular modding tools for GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. The GTA 5 roleplaying (RP) community has grown significantly in recent years, with many RP servers demanding monthly fees for access to exclusive game content.
While Rockstar's talks with creators are reportedly still in the early stages, Digiday says that details are unconfirmed. It's unclear how creators would benefit directly from putting their intellectual properties and audiences into GTA 6, aside from the renown that comes with being a part of one of gaming's most successful franchises.
GTA 6 Remains on Track for 2025 Release
Meanwhile, Rockstar's parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has maintained that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be released later this year. During its Q3 results conference for fiscal year 2025, the publisher confirmed that the game will arrive in Fall 2025 as planned.
If Rockstar opens GTA 6 to user-generated content, it might change the way players engage with the game, increasing its longevity and appearance. Stay tuned for more details as Rockstar's plans progress.
