Ubisoft has officially announced a 2026 release date for the much awaited remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This statement came during Monday's Ubisoft Forward event, which also featured a new teaser trailer. However, the developer has yet to reveal which platforms the game will be released on.
The game had been in development at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai for two and a half years before it was unveiled in September 2020. Initially, the release date was set for January 2021. However, the reveal trailer had a terrible reception, resulting in multiple delays. By last year, Ubisoft Montreal, the team behind the original 2003 game, had taken over development.
Despite the challenges, Ubisoft stated last month that "excellent progress" was being made on the project. In a quick update, it was announced that Ubisoft Toronto has teamed up with Ubisoft Montreal to work on the remake. Ubisoft Toronto is well-known for its work on big games such as Far Cry 5, Far Cry 6, Watch Dogs Legion, and the upcoming Splinter Cell remake.
Darryl Long, managing director of Ubisoft Toronto said,
The game holds a special place for many of us at our studio,” said Darryl Long, managing director of Ubisoft Toronto. I still remember how much fun I had playing the original with its breakthrough feature that lets you rewind time. We now have the chance to rewind time ourselves, and bring our updated tech, expertise, and creativity to modernize this classic game with our partners at Ubisoft Montreal.
Ubisoft also announced that "Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown" will receive a free content update, with narrative DLC coming in September.
As fans eagerly await the release, it is evident that Ubisoft is dedicated to providing a remake that pays tribute to the iconic original while including fresh ideas and creative changes.
